‘Close No. 37 High Street’, Glasgow, 1868
The photograph, taken by Thomas Annan in 1868, shows a close behind No. 37 High Street in Glasgow.
In 1868 the City of Glasgow Improvement Trust approached Thomas Annan to take photographs of some of the slum areas of the city prior to demolition.
I love pictures like these. The fact that these were probably the only photographs these people ever appeared in in their whole lives makes them special, I think, and so far removed from today, when almost everyone in the civilized world has been photographed over and over again.
When these were taken, photography was a special, almost magical thing.

A style muse for me—short hair, great frames, dark colors, wonderful collar on that dress. Perfection!
